Two new games in Lalo: Listen and Big & small

Sixteen activities were already plenty, and we did not add two to pad the number. Two specific things were missing: a game where the child listens instead of looking, and one where they compare instead of recognise. Version 1.1.0 was submitted to both stores today; as soon as it clears review, the update arrives on its own.

Listen: the voice speaks, the finger answers

Lalo says a word, “key”, and on the table there are three or five cards with a picture each. The child taps the right one. There is nothing to read: it is pure listening comprehension, already mature at three while reading is still far away. A big button repeats the word as many times as needed, with no penalty. At the hard level the voice says a letter and the cards become letters: the bridge between sound and sign, the one school will later call phoneme and grapheme. The voices are the ones already recorded for the app's seventeen languages, so Listen speaks the language of the home from day one.

Big & small: the same object, different sizes

Three or four identical elephants, except for their size. “Tap the biggest”, or “the smallest”. It sounds trivial and it is not: comparing two sizes while ignoring everything else, colour, shape, position, is a mental operation children build between three and five. At the hard level there are five objects to tap in order, from smallest to biggest, with a little number appearing at every correct tap. That is seriation, the first building block of mathematical reasoning, before written numbers even come in.

A medal for every game

Until today the album collected stickers only from tracing letters, numbers and words; a child playing Memory or Puzzle earned stars but left no trace. Now every activity has its own medal, earned after five rounds won, and for Draw and Colour a saved picture counts. Eighteen medals in a row, with the progress shown on the ones still missing. Listen also adds the recognised word or letter to the album, as Match already does.

When it arrives, and for whom

Version 1.1.0 is in review from today on Google Play and the App Store: it usually takes a day or two, then the update installs itself. The two new games are part of the full version, the one-time unlock that opens every activity; anyone who has already bought it gets them at no extra cost. Letters, Numbers, Colour and Match stay free as before. No ads, in any version. The home screen has also been rearranged to use the whole screen, and on tablets the menu moves to five columns.

Available in the next few days

If Lalo is already installed there is nothing to do: update 1.1.0 arrives on its own as soon as the stores approve it. If it is not there yet, the links are below.
